Domain; First Know
Friday, August 1, 2008
I prefer to use this analogy, a domain is as a name board, because it is easy and simple understanding. Supposed we live in an apartment. We know that there are a lot of people who live inside that apartment. Every of them has each room. To determine which room he has, he needs to write his name on the name board above the door of his room. He needs to do that to anticipate his friend not to visit the wrong room when the friend drops in. The way of that name board works is as the domain works in Internet world. In the same way the apartment can be similarly identified as hosting. Domain is actually a representative of the IP for the Internet User. Of course there some rule to convert the IP address into a memorable domain name. Some are as bellow:
International TLD
It is the short term of Top Level Domain. This TD is known as International TLD. We know that every domain has end extension. Some of the domain extension are .com (dot commercial), .net (dot network), .gov (dot government), .edu (dot education), .mil (dot military). However, the .com is the most popular TLD.
formerly, this Top Level Domain is used accordingly for its term. For eample, dot com is used for commercial while dot edu is used for education purpose. However application of TLD has been changing because the ownership if this TLD is automatic and free. Now days, domains from three most popular extension of dot com, dot net and dot gov are nearly overloaded. That is why it is very difficult to find the new domain with these three extension. Then domain authority, ICANN release some new TLD. They are .info, .biz, .news, .name, .museum, .coop, .aero. This regulation is purposely designed to accommodate the domainer to have easy availability of domain.
Local TLD
Beside of that International domain extension, we are also familiar with Local TLD. This is well-knows as ccTLD. It is the short term of Country Code Top Level Domain. That is why we know a lot of sites with domain address ending with .uk, .my, .in, .id. Dot uk is ccTLD for England. Dot my is for Malaysia. Dot in is for India while dot id is for Indonesia. Under this ccTLD, there are some sub-domain such as in Indonesia. The sub-domain is like .co.id applied for corporation or company, .net.id designed for net work or Internet Service Provider, .go.id is purposely for government institutions, .ac.id is for academic institutions, and mil.id is made for military necessity. Recently we often see the local domains ending with .sch.id which is applicable for schools. We also often hear local domain ending with .we.id which means this domain addresses for a personal web site. Possibly, there will appear an other new local domain extension.
